Yes, but do they have what it takes to reunite their country? That means taking on the US in a really meaningful way. The Japanese faltered at that hurdle, unable to get rid of the US military presence.
Reunification is probably only a matter of time, and could happen spectacularly quickly. North Korea’s media monopoly within its own borders is increasingly porous, and in fact DPR-ROK-PRC-JAP economic integration has been happening for some time now. It is at that point that the US military presence on the Korean peninsula may be up for renegotiation.
