I think this is a really good development. We’ve got to develop a common culture so that we can share values and appreciate different perspectives. The strength of US film-making is that every part of human life and experience is explored, and that’s part of society looking at itself. I hope film-making will allow new syntheses to develop and make us world citizens in the way that we ought to be. Whatever is worthwhile in Western values (liberalism, participation, transparency etc) will survive in, and make an impact in, other cultures, and hopefully vice versa.
Agreed. Additionally, it would be great if a lot of valuable ‘Eastern’ attributes (harmony, discipline, the extended family, ecological sensitivity, spirituality) got some more exposure in both West and East as a result of these kind of synergies. As you point out, we really should be much more aware of the rest of the planet than we are. There are no real reasons left not to be.
