There are many territories which choose to remain under the jurisdiction of the UK, as a British Overseas Territory ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Overseas_Territories ). They have made the decision time and again over many decades NOT to become independent, as it is detrimental to their interests.

In the same way, Pakistan should voluntarily accede sovereignty to the UK (or if that is unpalatable, at the very least became a part of China; India would be better but the brainwashed populace would never accept that). It’s under the English that much of the infrastructure that Pakistanis enjoy to this day were constructed, such as the railway lines, and Pakistan would grow leads and bounds if it were governed by the British or Chinese.

For a variety of reasons the country is not equipped to run itself, and having the humility to accept that is the only way for it to become stable, safe and prosperous.

The fact that most Pakistanis I've come across residing in Pakistan would give an arm and a leg to live in the UK - and some use all kinds of illegal means to get to the UK - speaks volumes about which country they believe is better run and more desirable to live in.

It's true that at least some European countries could need an injection of the Protestant Work Ethic. That said, the United States and Japan - two countries whose populations are not averse to spending large amounts of time in the office - are both also debt-soaked zero-growth zones, so there could be more to this than meets the eye. As you say, realistic and imaginative fiscal management is the key.

Well observed and well said.

Europe - I'm very sad to say - is yesterday's story. The future belongs to people who are willing to do some serious graft and make sacrifices for the future. When I was in Saudi Arabia not so long ago I met Pakistan immigrants who worked on construction sites in the searing heat for 10+ hours a day, 6 days a week. One of the guys told me happily he was earning $200 a month. And these guys did not complain at all about their work hours or living conditions (which were little more than shacks in the desert).

In the UK, it is a challenge to find somebody who will do more than two hour work without wanting to take a 'tea break'.

The philosophy among many Europeans is that you apparently produce better results if you spend lots of time resting (which for the majority means watching hours of TV sitcoms/dramas or sitting in Starbucks talking about football etc.); my philosophy, which most Europeans I speak with contest, is you produce better results if you spend that time working.

Like in many countries, inequality is hobbling an economy of real potential: Thailand's public debt is a mere 43.3% of GDP and it has the best part of US$200bn in foreign exchange reserves. Ironically at least some of the rich in Thailand do actually seem to support populist policies which may improve the lot of the majority, but things could be so much better.

I don't disagree with your article, but I don't agree with boiling it down to 3 survival tips. Life is not that simple, though lessons which can be expressed in simple terms must of course be learned. The failing of many companies is the inability to appreciate and grasp the complexity of modern day economic environments. My single tip would be to open one's eyes as much as possible to see what's really happening and to expect to adapt to it all the time.

The elite and powerful in any country are very selfish and are quite ruthless in defending their interests. Their purpose is to get richer, and it's a real battle for anyone to get in their way. Ms Shinawatra is probably incapable of doing much about that, even if she wants to.

There is definitely some kind of transition happening. With technology yielding the possibility of multi-directional, multi-network conversations, the days of hierarchical dominance are probably over. One thing to watch for: religious cross-pollination. Umberto Eco's tongue-in-cheek 'prediction' of 'Sunni Christianity' may have a lot more truth to it than even he attributed to it.

I think a lot of things are happening simultaneously. Religion as practised by its followers is changing in all sorts of different ways. Secularisation, extremism, literalism, cultism is happening. In addition I would say Mankind as a whole is becoming more critical and demanding of all institutions. The young in every religion are asking (not always openly) what is religion good for? And their parents cannot really answer the question. Ultimately though a truth can stand up to critical analysis, and where it cannot it will not survive. Religions in their present form won't survive, and it does not matter. We will transition to new forms which will be better suited for Mankind's needs.
