  1. Strange to see Japan in turmoil over something ‘technical’. It’s time for traditions and old people to be replaced by something else. The samurai years are over, and Japan needs to become a country that can change, particularly sociologically. Young people need to become more important, and they need to ask more questions about why things are as they are.

    • Unfortunately, both this development and the return to power of the pro-nuclear LDP shows that Japan is experiencing similar problems to the US and much of Europe in terms of entrenched lobbies and a chasm between the generations. Since Fukushima there has been incredible soul-searching and the rise of a protest movement unprecedented in the history of modern Japan, but this has yet to translate into anything much at the polling booth.
