  1. The immigration debate does get hijacked by extremists, but I don’t think it’s a simple as the more immigration, the better. In the UK at least we have increasing numbers of NEETs (not in education, employment or training), i.e. people who are dropping out of the system. They need jobs if we are going to get them back on their feet, but it’s easier to get foreigners to do the work. This is a complicated subject on which public debate is difficult, but I think we need to move away from polarised views to more nuanced understandings of the impacts immigration has.

    • You are quite correct to point to the need to get away from polarised positions. However, it would help if the debate was more realistic to begin with. For example, the fact that there are shortages of highly skilled workers across the world’s developed economies is scarcely ever mentioned.
